Highlights of this year’s festivals – Deadline

Despite the lingering challenges of the pandemic, it has been a year of highlights for film festivals around the world.

Who could forget Spike Lee’s now infamous moment when he accidentally revealed the Palme d’Or winner at Cannes this year after a translation error? What would you say Titanium is director Julia Ducournau making history by becoming the first woman to win the Cannes first solo prize? (Jane Campion, the only other director to win the Palme, shared her award with Chen Kaige in 1993.)

Once again, Covid has reared its ugly head, disrupting events throughout the year. Some festivals were forced to be fully online, while others held physical editions but were limited in their ability to invite talent due to travel restrictions.

Cannes remained steadfast in its determination to host an in-person event, which would ultimately take place in July. Given the circumstances, the proceedings went impressively, although the daily saliva-based Covid tests were off-putting to some.

Venice and Toronto also took place physically, albeit with lower attendance than usual, setting the stage for the awards race that is now raging.
