IU Talks About Attending The Cannes Film Festival And Working With Song Kang Ho In “Broker” Soompi
UI recently took part in an interview to talk about his film “Broker” and his experience at the 75th Cannes Film Festival!
“Broker,” which hit theaters on June 8 after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival last month, is the first-ever Korean film directed by acclaimed Japanese director Koreeda Hirokazu. The film tells the story of baby boxes, which are set up so that people who are no longer able to support their babies abandon them anonymously. Song Kang Ho and Kang star Dong Won as self-proclaimed and well-meaning “broker” partners Sang Hyun and Dong Soo. IU plays So Young, a new mother who ends up joining the brokerage journey. Bae Doona and Lee Joo Young Play as Detective Soo Jin and Detective Lee chasing the brokers.
IU commented that she felt out of touch at the Cannes Film Festival, saying, “My schedule there was so packed that I didn’t know if I was in Cannes or somewhere else. It’s always like that. .”
His co-star Song Kang Ho made history at the historical film festival when he won the best actor award for his role in “Broker”, becoming the first Korean man to do so. IU commented, “It was so amazing to see Song Kang Ho take home the Best Actor award. I immediately had goosebumps. She also said it sounded like a scene from a movie when he took the stage to deliver his acceptance speech. She added, “After receiving the award, Song Kang Ho said, ‘I’m grateful to everyone.’ I was so grateful that he mentioned me.
IU received many positive reviews for her role in the film, to the point that some even wondered if she would receive the Best Actress award. IU humbly replied, “I’m glad people think so highly of me, but I don’t have any lingering feelings of not receiving an award.”
She continued, “After the movie premiered and I heard people were saying a lot of good things about my acting, I didn’t believe it at first. I thought they were only supposed to tell me the good bits, but I realized that after having the comments run through a translator. It was new for me that there were people who were impressed by my acting. I wondered if it was because of the director. I felt really good.
On working with Song Kang Ho, IU said, “He was almost always the first person to arrive on set. I found it amazing to just be on set, and I wondered whether or not I was suited to that environment. I thought, ‘I just have to do well.’ »
IU said the most difficult scene in the film was the opening scene where she had to leave the baby in the church baby box in the middle of the rain. “We had rain all night from the very first scene,” she recalled. “It was really cold and it had a physical impact. But when I watched the movie, I thought it turned out really well and I was satisfied. Everyone has been through a lot.
To prepare for her role, IU had to practice her cursing skills. She revealed, “I practiced cursing in front of my parents because they were the most objective. I remember asking them to tell me if it seemed awkward.
IU also shared how she decided to take part in the film. “I really wanted to work with director Koreeda Hirokazu,” she explained. “I was also in contact with Bae Doona. She was chosen before me, so I asked her about it and she thought it would be a great idea, which strengthened my resolve.
IU summed up her experience in the film, saying, “There were a lot of storylines that I didn’t personally experience, so there were some difficulties. I wondered if I would be able to implicitly represent people who have experienced such things. I think everyone has self-compassion, but So Young has no room for such luxury in her life, so that part was really sad.
As for her future plans, IU commented, “I think I’m someone who was born to work. Someone who has to keep working.
