19th Chennai International Film Festival is here, promising a treat of 121 films from 53 countries
“The feeling of watching a film on the big screen is another thing,” explains E Thangaraj, secretary general of the Indo Film Appreciation Foundation. “The sound and visual effects can only be fully felt in a movie theater,†he emphasizes. The Foundation’s 19th Chennai International Film Festival seeks to deliver exactly that to film lovers.
Over the past two years, more films have been shown on OTT platforms than on the big screen, Thangaraj hopes the festival will provide food for moviegoers. “This is the opportunity for them to watch our selection of award-winning films from around the world,†he adds.

This year, the festival will present 121 films from 53 countries and take place at two venues: PVR Multiplex (formerly Sathyam Cinemas) and SDC Anna Cinemas. Thangaraj highlights films such as Three floors by Nanni Moretti, Vortex by Gaspar Noé, A hero, and When the pomegranates roar, both of which were nominations for the 94th Academy Awards.
Nine Iranian films, five Korean, six French and four Malayalam films are screened. This includes the winners of the international festivals of Cannes, Berlin, Fajr in Iran, Venice, San Sebastian and Tokyo. There will also be a special screening of Singeetam Srinivasa Rao Dikkatra Parvathi, apart from 11 Tamil films selected by the Foundation’s preview committee. These included Sivaranjinyum Innum Sila Pengalum, Maara, Karnan, Thaen, and Seththumaan.
