The San Diego International Film Festival, starting Thursday, celebrates its 20th anniversary with films starring Oscar winners Olivia Colman and Joaquin Phoenix, and a screening aboard the USS Midway.
The hybrid festival, with in-person and virtual events and screenings, will take place at several locations, including the Midway Museum in downtown, the Museum of Photographic Arts and the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park and the Catamaran Resort in Mission Bay.
The festival runs until October 24.
Fans of last year’s festival got a chance to see the future Oscar winner Nomadic country before its wide distribution. This year feature highlights understand:
- go! Go on, with Phoenix, screened at 7 p.m. Thursday, opening night at MOPA, ahead of its November 19 release.
- The power of the dog, a period play starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst, at 4 p.m. Friday at MOPA. Oscar winner Jane Campion is directing the film, which is slated for release on November 17.
- The lost girl, with Colman, screened at 6.30 p.m. Sunday at the Catamaran. The film marks the writing and directing debut of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, based on the novel by Elena Ferrante. It is due out on December 17th.
Additionally, the Midway screening on October 23 features The hornet’s nest, a 2014 documentary on America’s long war in Afghanistan.
Patrons can also access more than 150 films on demand in the festival’s âVirtual Villageâ, as well as questions and answers with filmmakers from around the world.
Tonya Mantooth, CEO and artistic director of the festival, called the list “one of the strongest film schedules in our 20-year history.” She also noted changes in the industry, including more filmmakers who are women and / or people of color, and the increase in films that examine social topics.
âWe are excited to provide a platform to present this change,â said Mantooth.
The festival received more than 3,000 applications from films representing more than 65 countries for the 2021 edition.
Full festival pass start at $ 159, while virtual passes are $ 49. Individual screenings cost $ 16.
